BARTON-ON-SEA (HAMPSHIRE)

EOCENE

Summary: The slumping cliffs at Barton-on-Sea yield a range of fossils, including shark teeth, shells and other marine fossils. Access and facilities are good.

BRACKLESHAM BAY (WEST SUSSEX)

EOCENE

Summary: This is one of the best locations in the UK to find Eocene fossils. The frequency and quality of finds is excellent, especially after stormy weather. Bracklesham Bay is a good location for all the family.

DOVER (KENT)

CRETACEOUS

Summary: Dover is a classic fossil hunting location, although best suited to experienced collectors and not families. The fossils are not readily found and those that are require careful extraction to prevent damage.

EASTBOURNE (EAST SUSSEX)

CRETACEOUS

Summary: A great location to find a variety of fossils, including Ammonites and Nautilus. This area is well known for the high quality and size of fossils found there. Find frequency is ok, but best following a recent cliff collapse.

FAIRLIGHT (EAST SUSSEX)

CRETACEOUS

Summary: Fairlight and Hastings are two of a limited number of UK locations where you can explore sediments laid down above sea level during the Lower Cretaceous epoch. Despite the low find frequency, Fairlight provides an understanding of what was happening 140 million years ago.

Fossils: Dinosaur footprints and bones, bivalves, plant remains...

FOLKESTONE (KENT)

CRETACEOUS

Summary: One of the best places to find fossils on the south coast. This beach is easily accessible and the volume and quality of fossils is hard to beat.

HASTINGS (EAST SUSSEX)

Summary: Herne Bay is far from a beauty spot, unless you happen to love mud, however the abundant fossils more than compensate for the poor scenery.

ISLE OF SHEPPEY (THAMES ESTUARY)

EOCENE

Summary: Fossils are abundant at Sheppey and little experience is needed to find a wide range of fossils. The best fossils in this location include complete crab, fish and lobsters. This location is not recommended for families.

PEACEHAVEN (EAST SUSSEX)

CRETACEOUS

Summary: Peacehaven is the best place to view some of the largest ammonites in the world. Although fossil collecting of these ammonites is prohibited, certain areas do allow fossil collecting.

Summary: One of the most famous places to find Cretaceous fossils, Seven Sisters offers a variety of good quality fossils. The location has excellent facilities, good access and is suitable for families.

Summary: A good source of chalk fossils, but more suitable to professional collectors. Seaford offers a good range of fossils, including many complete specimens.
